Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo is $20,000 (about UGX. 73,892,680) rich after winning the 16thUnited Airlines New York City Half Marathon on Sunday, March 19, 2023.
The 22-year-old long distance athlete crossed the finishing line in 1:01:31 under cold and windy conditions.
Country-mate Joshua Cheptegei scooped silver with a timing of 1:02:09 to earn $10,000 (at least UGX. 38,000,000).
Morocco’s Zouhair Talbi came third with a time of 1:02:09 to earn $5000 (UGX 18,000,000).
“The race was good from start to finish. I did my best despite the coldness. I am happy for this very victory,” Kiplimo, the world record holder of the half marathon stated.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s Hellen Obiri won the women version after clocking 1:07:21, a course record ahead of Ethiopian Senbere Telfei (1:07:55) and Great Britain’s Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal (1:09:53).
Wheelchair
French man Jetze Plat won the men wheel chair race with a timing of 48:28.
The women wheel chair race was won by USA’s Susannah Scaroni with 55:47.
This was the 16th edition of the United Airlines New York city, arguably America’s largest half-marathon with about 25,000 runners.
