The City Council of Oakland, California has made the decision to rename a section of MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue as “Tupac Shakur Way.” This move pays tribute to the iconic rap legend and his deep connection to the city.

TUPAC’S CONNECTION TO OAKLAND

Tupac Shakur, renowned for his artistry, activism, and controversial public persona, had a significant connection to Oakland. He resided in the Bay Area during the production of his 1991 album “2Pacalypse Now” and collaborated with the Bay Area rap group Digital Underground. Tupac credited Oakland for shaping his “game” in hip-hop, highlighting the city’s influence on his career.

TUPAC’S MANY HONORS

Oakland has previously recognized Tupac’s contributions. In 2016, city officials declared June 16, his birthday, as Tupac Shakur Day. This new renaming of a section of MacArthur Boulevard further solidifies Oakland’s appreciation for the late rapper and his lasting impact on the music industry.

The critically acclaimed Hulu docuseries “Dear Mama” explores the life of Tupac Shakur and sheds light on his relationship with his mother, Afeni Shakur.  This insightful documentary offers a glimpse into Pac’s personal journey including the impact of his life growing up among the leaders in The Black Panther Party.

The city of Los Angeles has a mural that memorializes the enigmatic artist, who also spent time there. The cherished mural, which features Tupac and other West Coast icons, faces the risk of demolition, prompting the initiation of a petition to save this beloved symbol of artistic expression. As of today(5/16/23), the petition has amassed more than 27,000 signatures and the city government has agreed to meet and discuss the future of the mural.

Similarly, rap icon Missy Elliott was recently honored with her own street.” Missy Elliott Boulevard” was named in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, recognizing her contributions to the music industry.
