On a global scale, the film industry is flowing with award ceremonies from every corner of the world. From USA’s Academy Awards (known by many as the Oscars) to The South African Film and Television Awards (dubbed the SAFTA’s). Every year there is much buzz within the global film industry for these awards. Even so much as a nomination can make just as big an impact as a win in some cases.

World over still, critics can grumble all they want about endless chicken dinners and the same rotating group of directors earning film glory. The awards remain a vital touchpoint in the vast financial ecosystem that keeps show business afloat — and lifts up new talent.

On 25 March 2023, the Ikon Awards held its debut edition in a red-carpet event at Serena Hotel Kampala.

Themed “Dreaming With The Stars”, the event was graced by a number of dignitaries from various fields of the entertainment industry.

Singers like Irene Ntale, Benty Boys Africa, and others performed at the event, which was hosted by Antia Fabiola and Uncle Mo.

In attendance were the likes of Nigerian actor Ramsey Nouah, Miss Uganda 2023 Hannah Karema, Eddy Kenzo, and Abryanz, among many other stars.

The Ikon Awards succeeded in recognizing and honoring game-changers in the Ugandan film and television industry, and more than 25 awards were presented to noteworthy individuals before exhilarated revelers, family and friends.
