This August, Howard University will host a 2-day Hip-Hop conference and block party. The conference will feature panel presentations by Hip-Hop Studies scholars from around the world, intergenerational conversations with Hip-Hop artists, workshops, activities, and performances.
The conference is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop culture’s emergence in the South Bronx. Many trace the origins of Hip-Hop culture, when the music, graffiti, and dance came together, to a house party in the South Bronx thrown by DJ Kool Herc and his sister, Cindy Campbell on August 11, 1973.
Proposals for papers and panels are now being accepted for the 2023 Hip Hop Symposium- HIP-HOP 50: Past, Present, & Future. “We are looking for applicants who’s work in theory and practice can help us define and contextualize what it means to contribute to Hip Hop culture”.
Hip Hop Studies as a discipline reveals the place of Hip Hop in the evolution of Black music and culture in America. It also reveals the economic, social, and political factors that have shaped Hip Hop culture globally, and how Hip Hop culture has shaped economics, society, and politics globally.
