Did you get time to watch Waluganda Ep? This is yet another addition onto the Ugandan Hip-hop catalogue. It was released mid-February 2021 by the multi-talented Phitzo Kiganda Mcee who besides mceeing is also a fashion designer, drummer, producer and entrepreneur. He made headlines in 2020 when he made it among the top four finalists in the Uganda Hip-hop rap battles whose main judges were the legendary Babaluku and Navio.
The EP is his debut and has six tracks. The theme of the title track ‘Waluganda’ centres around togetherness and the spirit of brotherhood Phitzo and Taye Mwasiba take turns to trade bars in a call-and-response fashion. Recently released as a single on iTunes, ‘Mitayibwa’ has the rapper explaining to us his journey on how he learnt to pack a beat with dope sixteens. This track’s sound also starts off with beatboxing. ‘2020’ takes us back to the times just before the Covid-curfew was implemented. The times everyone lived a normal life before being sent back to the drawing on the advent of the new limited-budget lifestyle that we were supposed to adopt.
‘Wholipa Style’ has the rapper showcasing his relentless skills on the mic with Nsonga Mcee, ‘Gimme di mic’ reminds us how fearless the rapper is when he has the mic in his grip and how eager and ready he always is to grab an opportunity when it presents itself. The EP also features other artists like DXL Magezi and Viro Mcee.
The Nansana-born and raised emcee first made a grand appearance as part of the Bacypher Kabaka rap group that also has a number of other prominent artists in it. He did his first studio song called ‘Dear sis’ at Portbell Drive Studio and has never looked back since then. In 2016, he was part of a joint album that his rap group released on CD called ‘Ekyombo Kwagala’.
The EP was produced and mastered at Kiyiira records in Masajja, Ggangu by himself, under the alias Phizzix One, Young Dollar and Natural Counts. It was released both digitally and on CD at 20,000 shs per copy @+256708306900.
