Daudi Mustafa, known by his stage name Colonel Mustafa recently made headlines after he was spotted working at a construction site to make ends meet.
His video went viral sparking mixed reactions from Kenyans on social media.
At his peak, the musician was one of Kenya’s finest rappers and was part of the rap group Deux Vultures which included Nasty Thomas. Among the hits the group dropped were Monalisa and Adhiambo C endearing themselves to Kenyan fans.
Mustafa narrates how he went broke When the Deux Vultures group split, each artiste went his separate way. As reported by Who Owns Kenya, Mustafa secured employment in the corporate world by working as a copywriter at Scanad. During his time at the firm, he earned a monthly salary of KSh 250,000. Besides his employment at Scanad, he wrote jingles for different brands raking in an average of KSh 700,000 per month. This brought his total earnings to KSh 950,000.
“I was a copywriter getting KSh 250,000 every month. And then, I also believed that it didn’t hurt to present a jingle idea to any of the client services within whatever account at any agency, so I was a supplier.
Mustafa revealed that despite earning close to a million, he ended up with many debts.
“In a month I would write at least ten jingles for different brands and it would give me let’s say, KSh 700,000 extra. Money was never the issue but I never saw that money because my spirituality wasn’t lit. That money ended up creating more debts.
How Mustafa lost his job The musician recalled how he lost his job after an argument with his bosses over a client he alleged got a raw deal. “There were people who were giving the client a raw deal at that time. I said something I shouldn’t have said, or rather I said it innocently and it offended one of the bosses,” he disclosed. He noted that at that time when he left the agency, he was addicted to alcohol and women who drove him crazy. Mustafa also revealed he used to pleasure himself and ran into debts amounting to KSh 3.5 million.
