Heavy Dee 51 is a Northern Uganda born and raised Luo native who’s been in the game for a while. He is a conscious revolutionary rapper, lyricist, performing artist, founder and CEO of Elephant Hip Hop Clan. For starters, he was one part of the now defunct crew called ‘Niyabo Hip-hop Squad’ that rocked Gulu and the entire Hip-hop fraternity at large, in the early 2010s.

A graduate of Gulu Central High School, his first rapping moment came at the age of 12 after he had been heavily inspired by his aunt who used to play 50 Cent cassette tapes on repeat. He says he didn’t take the craft so serious at first because it involved a lot of talking until, he later realized the art that was in assembling the 16 bars. He became fly with the game and discovered he could use it for spreading powerful messages via creative teaching.

He played a lot of records because he was trying to curve out a signature niche for himself plus perfecting his flow. As early as 15, he started composing his songs and writing. He freestyled at school functions and the students nicknamed him ‘Heavy Dee’ because of his big body frame and weight. The ‘Dee’ was derived from shortening his first name ‘Derrick’.

He went on to perform at several events with his crew all over his hometown and the country. He has been on several cyphers with his group like ‘The Konnected to Africa Cypher’ which had a collection of several acts from Gulu. He has one album for his career. It’s called AN LUO and has 10 songs including: An Luo, Ododo, Ikare me Lweny, Don’t be Afraid, Lyrical Maturity, Lupyem. Doesn’t Matter, Up-Knowledge. It features artists like NyinoMugisha, Black Mc, Jay O Apararyo and Scariot King. He still juggles work with his other side hustles. He says he still down for the game and has several projects in the pipeline. Listen and download Ododo: https://bit.ly/351Xph8
